Bus Hits Police Car; 11 Injured

From the Associated Press

A transit bus slammed into a Burlingame police car Friday, injuring both drivers and nine passengers on the bus.

The police officer was driving south on El Camino Real in Burlingame about noon when he apparently swerved to avoid a truck that pulled out in front of him, said Jonah Weinberg, a spokesman for the San Mateo County Transit District. The officer’s car was struck by the northbound bus.

The collision left the police car pinned between the bus and a tree.

The officer sustained major head injuries and was taken to an area hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition, said Christian Oliver, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol.

The bus driver and nine passengers, including a newborn, also were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, Oliver said.

There were 14 passengers on the bus at the time of the collision.

The Burlingame Police Department declined to comment several hours after the incident, saying it was still investigating.
