I was glad to read that Disney has decided not to renew its 10-year Happy Meal deal with McDonald’s (May 8). But government regulation can be far more effective and cover more ground.
A city or county could prohibit fast-food outlets from distributing toys in connection with “non-nutritious” food, however it chooses to define that. Food sold as a complete meal package could be required to stay within certain limits of calories or fat. We need stronger government regulations to hold these industries accountable for the effect of their marketing and to create an economic landscape in which selling nutritious food to kids is more profitable.
