Lawyer Ron Will Have Foot Surgery
Lawyer Ron, 12th in the Kentucky Derby after being one of the early favorites, will undergo surgery today for a “very small fracture†in his right hind foot and is out of the Preakness Stakes, said Ron Bamberger, executor of the estate of the late James T. Hines Jr.
“We got a report back and it wasn’t good,†said Bamberger, who two days before the Derby sold a majority interest in the horse and its breeding rights to Audrey Haisfield of Stonewall Farm near Versailles, Ky.
Bamberger said Lawyer Ron is expected to return this year as a 3-year-old but said three veterinarians who examined him agreed about the injury after looking at more X-rays.
Another Derby horse, second-to-last finisher Sharp Humor, will undergo surgery today for a small fracture in one of his knees, said trainer Dale Romans.
Six starters are confirmed for the Preakness: Derby winner Barbaro, Santa Anita Derby winner Brother Derek, Sweetnorthernsaint, Like Now, Bernardini and new addition Hemingway’s Key, owned by George Steinbrenner’s Kinsman Stable.
Trainer Bob Baffert is still considering whether to run Point Determined and Bob And John.
Simon Pure, trained by Wayne Lukas, is no longer likely to be entered in the Preakness.
