City Council Panel OKs Trash Fee Increase
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The City Council’s budget committee voted 4 to 1 on Wednesday in favor of implementing a $17 trash fee increase over four years to pay for hiring 1,000 police officers.
The plan is the centerpiece of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s first budget, which will be debated in the full council beginning next week.
Councilman Greig Smith was the dissenting vote.
He said he agreed with a trash fee increase in principle, but that Villaraigosa’s proposal raised it too much, too quickly.
