2-Year-Olds Open the Week
The first 2-year-old race of the Santa Anita winter-spring meet will begin the week in Arcadia.
Fourteen California-bred fillies were entered on Sunday morning for the two-furlong race, but only 10 will start.
One of the fillies to beat in the quarter-mile dash might be Fancy And Free. A daughter of Future Storm, she has worked pretty well at Fairplex Park for her first outing and comes from a barn (Shane Chipman) that did well with the youngsters here a year ago.
Although Chipman won only one of these two-furlong races in 2005, he hit the board with six others. Robert Boyce is scheduled to ride Fancy And Free, who is owned by breeder Harold Phenix.
Trainer Marcelo Polanco has a pair in the race -- Rockella and Sylvana.
Rockella is by Tribal Rule, and Sylvana is a daughter of Indian Charlie.
Race of the day: Touchdown Kid, who beat maidens by 5 1/4 lengths Jan. 29 at Santa Anita, will make his first start for trainer Bill Mott in the seventh race today at Aqueduct. Mike Luzzi will ride the 4-year-old Rodeo gelding in the $46,000 optional claimer at one mile.
One for the road: Radon goes first off the claim for trainer Art Sherman as she tries for her 11th lifetime victory over her favorite track in the fifth race today at Golden Gate Fields. Roberto Gonzalez will ride the 7-year-old Lord Carson mare in the $16,000 claimer at six furlongs. Radon has won seven of 25 at Golden Gate.
Exotically speaking: A pick three using Pleasant Thunder in the second, Cinema Star and Pure American in the third and Cut Trail, Summer Survivor and Excessively N Love in the fourth.
Winners: (previous day/meet total): 1/181. Money: (previous day/meet total): $5.80/$1,075.40. Total money bet: $1,052.
