Re “Abortion Ban Puts Strategies in Doubt,” March 7
Yes, legalized abortion does mean that rape victims don’t have to bear the burden of a child that they never asked for, and yes, legalized abortion is a symbol of liberty. But there are thousands of women who haven’t been raped who abort children, and liberty has always been limited for the good of society. Sure, we’d be freer if we could murder anybody that we pleased, but we can’t because it endangers society.
Pregnancy is naturally an outcome of sexual intercourse, and allowing any man or woman to take action without taking responsibility for the outcome of those actions means that we as a society harbor irresponsibility. Whether or not these abortion bans succeed, they at least show that society is beginning to agree on the sad truth that abortion harbors irresponsibility in a world where one simply can’t afford it.

South Dakota allows the death penalty while banning abortion. Killing, per se, is clearly not the issue the governor and his supporters find objectionable -- only who is allowed to make the decision about it.
