Lakers’ NBA title victory sparks riot
June 19, 2000: After the Los Angeles Lakers won their first NBA title in 12 years -- with a 116-111 Game 6 victory over the Indiana Pacers -- the celebration outside Staples Center got out of hand.
Crowds torched two police cars and more than 70 cars were damaged, many at auto dealerships.
Vandals also destroyed a TV van and several trees and caused $500,000 to $700,000 in damage to businesses in the downtown area.
Police arrested 11 people and at least a dozen others were injured.
