Sempra Energy Price Settlement Approved

San Diego County Superior Court Judge Ronald Prager gave final approval to a nearly $1.8-billion settlement with Sempra Energy over allegations that it conspired to restrict natural gas supplies and raise prices during the state’s energy crisis.
Sempra, which owns utilities Southern California Gas Co. and San Diego Gas & Electric Co., admitted no wrongdoing but agreed to pay $375 million and provide price discounts and other benefits to settle the claims brought by class-action attorneys and others.
A spokesman said the California attorney general’s office, which joined other agencies in objecting to the settlement because it could prevent the state from seeking a separate recovery, was weighing whether to appeal the judge’s decision.
