Two people were burned to death and eight others hurt when a speeding pickup launched off a freeway exit embankment and slammed into a line of stopped cars, triggering several explosions, officials said.
The Ford F-150 became airborne while exiting Interstate 280 Monday night and hit three cars waiting at a stoplight at 11th Street, said CHP Officer Steve Perea. One vehicle burst into flames, killing both occupants.
The truck’s driver, John Mayfield, 51, of Paso Robles, was hospitalized Tuesday, with burns and cuts, Perea said. He was not arrested, but the investigation was continuing.
