California Holds Off Washington State

California survived a late scare to send Washington State to its sixth consecutive defeat, 55-53, Saturday at Berkeley.

Leon Powe posted his fifth consecutive double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Golden Bears, who looked nothing like the team that defeated No. 10 Washington, 71-69, on Thursday night.

Cold-shooting Cal, 12-6 overall, 6-3 Pacific 10 Conference, won it at the free-throw line with a 20-for-25 performance to beat the Cougars (9-9, 2-7) for the third consecutive time.

Powe was called for goaltending with 47 seconds left to give Robbie Cowgill two of his 13 points, then Kyle Weaver got the Cougars to within 53-51 on a layup with 22.6 seconds to go.

Ayinde Ubaka made two free throws, then Aron Baynes quickly scored for Washington State to make it 55-53. Ubaka took the inbounds pass under the Cougar basket and eluded defenders as he dribbled the ball upcourt, allowing California to run out the final 12.2 seconds.

North Carolina 86, Arizona 69 -- Tyler Hansbrough had 21 points and 11 rebounds at Chapel Hill, N.C., to help the Tar Heels (12-5) end a three-game winning streak by the Wildcats (13-7) and hand them their worst loss of the season.

Reyshawn Terry and Danny Green each scored 13 points, and point guard Bobby Frasor had nine assists with no turnovers for the Tar Heels (12-5), who won for only the second time in the past five games and tied the all-time series with the Wildcats at 3-3.
