Al Qaeda in Iraq said in a Web posting that its “lions in Mosul” were behind the downing of a U.S. military helicopter that killed its two pilots.
The statement’s authenticity could not be verified. It was posted on a website often used by insurgents.
Witnesses had reported seeing men armed with heavy machine guns open fire on the OH-58D Kiowa near Mosul. The U.S. military said the crash of the helicopter appeared to have been caused by hostile fire.
