Duke fallout

Re “An unlevel playing field,” editorial, Dec. 26

We don’t have any business, really, being so public about a case that is not in our town. What is lost in all this fervor over the Duke University rape investigation is the devastating side effect: The loss of the voice of the accuser in a rape or sexual assault case. Would The Times doubt the veracity of or even comment to this extent on a case of a man, let’s say, being robbed?

The repeated opinions from outside the Durham area, and across cable news, are the reason that victims in the future will suffer in silence.
