Free weekend tows on I-5 recommended
An Orange County Transportation Authority committee recommended Monday that $500,000 be earmarked to provide free towing service on weekends for Interstate 5.
The Highway Patrol made the request to fund an 18-month pilot program in South County because of heavy weekend traffic from Alicia Parkway south to the San Diego County border.
Weekend service was also recommended for the Santa Ana Freeway near the Los Angeles County border in Buena Park, where a $314-million freeway widening project began in June.
Free towing is available for stranded motorists on county freeways Monday through Friday during peak commute hours. If approved by the board, daytime weekend service for both areas will begin this month.
