Premier Says He Never Saw Cables on Iraq

Australian Prime Minister John Howard testified today that he knew Saddam Hussein had broken sanctions against Iraq in U.N. oil-for-food deals but that he did not know any Australian firm was involved.
Howard was testifying to an official inquiry into allegations that the country’s monopoly wheat exporter AWB Ltd. had paid millions of dollars in kickbacks to Hussein’s regime.
Howard echoed testimony from his foreign and trade ministers, saying he had not seen 21 cables about possible kickbacks.
