Pregnant Teens, Moms Back in Regular Classes

Pregnant students and teen mothers will be permitted to attend regular classes in the Antelope Valley Union High School District as part of a settlement between the district and the American Civil Liberties Union, a spokesman said Monday.

The settlement comes more than a year after the ACLU filed suit in federal court against the district and the Los Angeles County Office of Education.

Before the settlement, the students were required to attend study hall classes and were barred from regular school courses, including college preparatory instruction.

Now, the district must provide the students with such services as child care and parenting instruction without barring them from regular school courses.
