Education Reform Begins at Home

L.A. mayoral candidate Bob Hertzberg’s endorsement of a reorganization of the Los Angeles Unified School District is just the latest in a long list of proposals to improve education over the last 30 or so years.
As a graduate of the LAUSD and a retired teacher and counselor after 37 years in this district, I have concluded that there are no administrative, fiscal or pedagogic changes that will ever make significant improvements in achievement.
Not until the students and their parents put in the time, energy and focus toward academic excellence will the recent and current mediocrity begin to improve. Today’s students have just as much innate ability and potential as those decades ago, but the priorities, discipline and values within families have changed, to the serious detriment of us all.
