Give graphic design its due

Thank you for your article on the California Design Biennial at the Pasadena Museum of California Art [“A Show That’s Oh, So California,†June 23].

I noticed, however, that none of the pieces you mentioned included the many fine examples of graphic design included in the show.

Why do I care? Well, I’m a graphic designer. And I wonder why it is that graphic design gets such short shrift. My going theory is that people can buy and cherish objects like Gideon Dagan’s Puzzle wine rack. They integrate such objects into their lives

Graphic design, by contrast, comes and goes unbidden -- as part of packaging and magazines, newspapers, posters and movie titles. It’s a side effect of other decisions. Nobody votes on graphic design with their wallets the way they do on a visit to Design Within Reach or even Target.
