Deputy’s Death Should Be a Call to Action
Re “Deputy’s Alleged Killer Held,†June 26: Sheriff Lee Baca is correct. Yes, prevention programs are sorely needed, and much needed is the suppression role to contain this out-of-control gang problem.
An errant 27-year-old decides to take the life of this 35-year-old, hardworking, dedicated sheriff’s deputy, Jerry Ortiz.
The cowardly actions of this suspect, Jose Luis Orozco, have hurt our local community and society.
Get angry. It’s healthy. Demand families evaluate their errant children. Utilize evidence-based “best-practices†prevention/intervention programs, fund a stronger law-enforcement suppression role.
Hopefully, as a community, we can embrace the words of Sheriff Baca and put these words into action.
State and local policymakers, are you listening?
