Minneapolis Newspaper Sued Over Circulation
The Minneapolis Star Tribune and parent McClatchy Co. of Sacramento were sued by four advertisers claiming the paper had inflated circulation figures since 1999 so it could charge higher rates.
The plaintiffs allege that the newspaper is dumping unsold copies and manipulating reports to the Audit Bureau of Circulation, according to a complaint filed in federal court in Minneapolis.
McClatchy in a statement said that the suit had no merit and that the company would “stand by our circulation practices at the Star Tribune and at all of our newspapers.†The Star Tribune has reported average daily circulation of 381,094 and Sunday circulation of 678,648.
