Tens of thousands of protesters rallied in Bolivia’s Santa Cruz region to back calls for provincial autonomy, days after President Carlos Mesa offered a referendum and local elections.
The demonstrators planned an assembly to decide whether to elect a de facto governor but said they were not aiming for independence.
