Semester at Sea Cut Short by 50-Foot Wave

A Semester at Sea research vessel with 990 people on board changed course and headed to Hawaii for repairs after being heavily damaged by a wave.
The 591-foot Explorer lost power in three of its four engines when a 50-foot wave broke bridge windows, damaged controls and injured two crew members. The vessel was about 650 miles south of Adak in the Aleutian Islands when the wave hit.
