Democrats Chase Bush ‘Propaganda’

House Democratic leaders asked the Social Security Administration on Friday to turn over articles, ads and contracts related to what they called a “covert propaganda†campaign to promote the Bush administration’s proposal to create stock accounts with the program’s funds.

In a letter to Social Security Commissioner Jo Anne B. Barnhart, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco and other Democrats said the Bush administration might have violated the law by using federal employees to advocate its political agenda. “There is a pattern of propaganda by the Bush administration that must be stopped,†Pelosi said.

Claire Buchan, a Bush spokeswoman, said the administration had not enlisted Social Security workers to do its political bidding. Rather, she said, the agency is “educating the public about solvency issues we face.â€
