Capturing coastal haze

Black and white images of crashing waves, looming clouds and tides rolling ashore are the subjects of the series “Oceana” by L.A.-based photographer Leslie Sokolow, who was inspired by “the totality and timeless power of Mother Earth’s very source of life.” For her five-year project, Sokolow used a Diana camera, a cult plastic toy camera known for giving images vignetting around the edges. It’s this fuzzy quality in “Oceana” that manages to capture the ominous and delicate elements of the sea.
