Free Up the CHP

Re “Mired in Paperwork, CHP Needs a Revamp,” Feb. 10: The California Highway Patrol, referred to among law enforcement brethren as “Auto Club with a gun,” shouldn’t have to spend all its time writing accident reports and towing disabled cars. Trained civilian traffic investigators could do the job at far less expense and free up the CHP officers for enforcing the speed laws. It’s the motorist speeding at 85 or 90 mph and the truckers tailgating everyone at 75 mph who are the cause of many accidents. Proactive enforcement of the speed limit would make freeway travel safer.
