Police have uncovered an Irish Republican Army money-laundering operation but cannot confirm yet whether the nearly $5 million in cash seized in nationwide raids came from a $50-million Belfast bank robbery, the government said.
Police said they found an undisclosed amount of stolen cash at a country club frequented by police. They said they believed it was planted there.
Several suspects were questioned, including a man allegedly caught burning a pile of British currency in his backyard.
In Ireland, police continued to interrogate Ted Cunningham, 56, a County Cork moneylender, about the $4.4 million they found in his home near Farran.
