UConn Forward in Hospital

Connecticut leading scorer Rashad Anderson has been hospitalized for an infection in his upper right leg.

Anderson checked into a Windham, Conn., hospital on Tuesday with a skin abscess in the inner thigh of his leg, and the infection was drained.

The junior forward, who averages 13.8 points a game, will remain hospitalized for two or three days and receive intravenous antibiotics, school officials said Wednesday.

Anderson’s status for Sunday’s game against second-ranked North Carolina at the Hartford Civic Center will be determined Friday afternoon.

Oregon forward Ian Crosswhite was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules.

Coach Ernie Kent did not say which rules Crosswhite broke.

Crosswhite, from Australia, is averaging 8.4 points and 5.7 rebounds this season.

Former Iowa player Pierre Pierce was charged with burglary and domestic assault and spent several hours in jail before he was released at Idel, Iowa.

Pierce was also charged with burglary, false imprisonment, assault with intent to commit sexual abuse and criminal mischief. A preliminary hearing was tentatively set for Feb. 21.

Pierce, the team’s leading scorer, was kicked off the team after police confirmed he was the subject of an investigation into a matter at the townhouse of a former girlfriend.
