Roy Steps It Up for Unbeaten Washington
Brandon Roy made good on a season-long promise to turn up his game in Pacific 10 Conference play, scoring a career-high 35 points to lead No. 7 Washington to a 91-67 victory over Arizona State on Thursday night in Seattle.
Roy matched his season average of 16 points in the first half, which ended with the Huskies rallying to take a 40-38 lead.
He scored his next 14 points in the first 11 minutes of the second half as Washington (11-0, 1-0) extended the nation’s longest home winning streak to 32 games.
The Huskies are off to their best start since the 1975-76 team began 14-0. The next test for their highest national ranking since 1984 comes Saturday at home against Arizona.
Kevin Kruger had 18 points for Arizona State (6-4, 0-1), which has lost five straight Pac-10 openers. The Sun Devils have six new players from last season’s 18-14 team.
The Huskies scored the final four points of the first half and the first 10 after halftime.
Washington, the nation’s leader in scoring at 91.6 points a game coming in, missed its first 10 shots. Through that, Arizona State led, 9-2. It was the Huskies’ largest deficit since Nov. 15, when they trailed Air Force by nine.
Arizona 70, Washington State 52 -- Hassan Adams scored 25 points to lead the Wildcats past the Cougars in Spokane, Wash. It was the Pac-10 opener for both teams.
Marcus Williams added 15 points for Arizona (8-3, 1-0). Derrick Low led Washington State (7-3, 0-1) with 11 points.
Washington State trailed, 24-22, before Adams scored six points to key an 11-4 Arizona run in the last three minutes of the first half.
The Wildcats’ 35-26 halftime lead grew to 49-32 after Adams scored the last 10 Arizona points during a 14-6 Wildcats’ spurt to open the second half.
The victory was Arizona’s 40th in its last 41 meetings with Washington State.
No. 20 Nevada 65, Louisiana Lafayette 58 -- Nick Fazekas had 26 points and eight rebounds to help the Wolf Pack (10-1) overcome poor free-throw shooting in Reno.
Reserve Marcelus Kemp added 12 points and point guard Ramon Sessions had 12 rebounds and seven assists for Nevada, which made only 14 of 27 free throws and missed seven in the final 1:22 to let the Ragin’ Cajuns (3-7) back in the game.
Dwayne Mitchell had 20 points and 10 rebounds for Louisiana Lafayette. Nevada is off to its best start since 1978-79.
