Peace on Earth? Not with Stein around

Re “Oy to the world,” Opinion, Dec. 6

Perhaps columnist Joel Stein, who evidently seems annoyed with our Christian traditions and mocks them, should go live in a non-Christian country -- let’s say one that we Christians have strongly supported at our expense for years.

Isn’t it great to live in a country (founded by Christians) that permits him to write divisive articles such as this one?

Yes, like it or not, this is a predominately Christian nation, and he should respect our religious traditions as we dare not disrespect his.

Stein is a funny guy, and he’s pretty much in tune with many other Jews on the matter of Christmas.

In all the years I spent in a predominantly Jewish business, not once did a client or co-worker look me in my Mexican Catholic face and say, “Happy holidays.” It was always “Merry Christmas,” delivered with knowing humor as I bolted out the door on Christmas Eve to rush to the airport in order to make my flight to Cancun. Because you see, like me, they knew that Jesus, being a sensible Jew, would certainly be found there, sitting around the pool wearing his jewelry.

Stein’s attempt at humor was pathetic, offensive to Christians and Jews, and in no way reflective of the opinion of Jews like myself who respect the beliefs and traditions of my own and other religions.

Stein’s column gave me the best laugh I’ve gotten from a Times piece in a long time. I do, however, believe that wishing everyone “Happy holidays” is the way to go.

Given how horrible everyone behaves this time of year on crowded freeways, in packed malls, etc., and how stressed everyone gets over credit card bills, it seems only fitting to hope that people find some small amount of happiness during an otherwise miserable time of year. Oy indeed.
