Red Sox Roll by Rogers
Maybe another week off would have done Kenny Rogers some good.
Rushed into the rotation when his suspension for shoving two cameramen was cut from 20 games to 13, Rogers gave up Manny Ramirez’s long home run in a five-run fourth inning Wednesday night and the Boston Red Sox scored nine more off the bullpen in the eighth to beat the Texas Rangers, 16-5, at Boston.
The Red Sox won their fourth straight game and their 12th in 14 tries to move 5 1/2 games in front of the New York Yankees in the AL East. It’s Boston’s biggest lead in the division since the end of the 1995 season.
Bronson Arroyo (10-7) gave up four runs and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. He took a 7-1 lead into the eighth before Texas scored four runs off four Boston pitchers to make it 7-5.
Rogers (11-5), who was booed at every turn, gave up five runs and seven hits in five innings, walking one and striking out five for his first loss since July 3.
Rogers was suspended 20 games by Commissioner Bud Selig for a June 29 tirade in which he shoved two cameramen. On Tuesday, an arbitrator trimmed the punishment to 13 games and Rogers joined the Rangers in Boston to get ready for his first start since July 26.
Chicago 2, New York 1 -- Juan Uribe slid in under catcher Jorge Posada’s tag to score a disputed run in the 10th inning, lifting the White Sox at New York.
Uribe tripled with one out in the 10th against Mariano Rivera (5-3). Scott Podsednik followed with a grounder to second baseman Robinson Cano and Uribe barely beat the throw home.
Baltimore 9, Tampa Bay 5 -- Jay Gibbons’ grand slam capped a five-run first inning at Baltimore, and the Orioles clinched their first series win since the All-Star break.
Cleveland 6, Kansas City 1 -- Grady Sizemore hit a grand slam at Kansas City, Mo., to help hand the hapless Royals their team record-tying 12th straight loss.
Toronto 4, Detroit 3 -- Orlando Hudson homered in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Blue Jays the victory.
Minnesota 7, Seattle 3 -- Luis Rodriguez’s tiebreaking RBI single and Joe Mauer’s two-run double in the 14th inning gave the Twins a victory at Seattle.
