Judge May Order Firms to Spend on Education

A federal judge raised the idea of ordering cigarette makers to spend specific amounts on educating the public about the dangers of smoking if she concluded the industry broke the law.
U.S. District Judge Gladys Kessler in Washington mentioned the idea as a remedy the Justice Department could seek if it prevailed in its racketeering suit accusing tobacco firms of deceiving the public about the dangers of smoking.
