Mayor Is First to Be Tried on Abuse Charges
From Times Wire Reports
Mayor Steve Christian became the first of seven Pitcairn Island men to go on trial on sexual abuse charges. They face a total of 55 charges in allegations going back as far as 1964.
Christian, a descendant of Bounty mutineer Fletcher Christian, faces six charges of rape and four of indecent assault. His accusers were to testify via video from Auckland, New Zealand.
Investigations were launched in 1999 after a visit by a British policewoman to the tiny colony.
