Oregon State Rolls, Arizona Reels
Derek Anderson threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, breaking the Oregon State career passing and total offense records in the process, and the Beavers beat Arizona, 28-14, on Saturday at Tucson.
Oregon State, which improved to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the Pacific 10 Conference, won its third in a row, all against conference opponents and next week plays host to No. 1 USC. Arizona (1-7, 0-5) lost its seventh straight game overall, and seventh in a row in conference play, dating to last season.
Anderson completed 17 of 31 passes for 249 yards, all but 47 in the first half. He had touchdown passes of two yards to Joe Newton and five yards to Anthony Wheat-Brown, and was not intercepted.
Anderson broke the school records on Oregon State’s first possession, completing five of six passes for 77 yards, capped by the scoring toss to Newton. The senior quarterback has thrown for 9,976 yards, breaking the record of 9,680 set by Jonathan Smith from 1998 to 2001.
By moving ahead of Smith, Anderson is fifth on the Pac-10 career list.
Mike Bell rushed for 88 yards in 21 carries and had a one-yard touchdown run for Arizona.
After Arizona missed a field-goal attempt, Oregon State went 80 yards in eight plays, using up 2:19, to go up 7-0 on Anderson’s pass to Newton.
On the Beavers’ next possession, Anderson was four for six for 53 yards on a five-play, 56-yard drive that ended with Ryan Cole’s two-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 with 3:53 left in the first quarter.
Oregon 31, Washington 6 -- Kellen Clemens threw two touchdown passes to freshman Cameron Colvin to lead the Ducks (5-3, 4-1) over the Huskies (1-7, 0-5) at Eugene, Ore.
Defensive end Chris Solomona also returned an interception 10 yards for another score for Oregon, which has won four in a row after losing three of its first four.
Clemens completed 21 of 34 passes for 134 yards and one interception.
Terrence Whitehead had a 30-yard touchdown run for the final margin and finished with 122 yards in 25 carries.
