No, West Virginia, there is no Santa Claus. And when it comes to the bowl championship series, there are no gifts either.
The No. 6 Mountaineers watched their road to a possible BCS berth vanish in front of their eyes after a 19-13 loss to Virginia Tech at Blacksburg, Va. The easy schedule ahead was too much to bear.
No. 7 Ohio State -- the Luckeyes as some assert -- also watched its good fortune disappear in a 33-27 overtime loss to Northwestern.
With No. 1 USC taking the week off, No. 3 Georgia finally made a serious statement in a 45-16 dismantling of Louisiana State.
No. 4 Miami also sent a message that its defense is still one of the best around after a 27-3 road victory over Georgia Tech.
No. 2 Oklahoma looked rather ordinary in a 28-13 victory over Texas Tech, but next week’s showdown with No. 5 Texas -- a 44-14 winner over Baylor -- will go far in helping thin the field of undefeated teams.
No. 8 Auburn improved to 5-0 and passed a significant test with a 34-10 road victory over Tennessee. No. 10 California also wasn’t caught looking ahead to its matchup with USC while scoring a 49-7 win over Oregon State.
