A Newport Beach motorcycle officer remained hospitalized in serious condition Monday, a day after he and another officer were injured when a driver turned left against a red light and hit them, authorities said.

Officer Matthew Chmura, 34, who has been with the department four years, was at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana in intensive care with a leg injury, said Lt. John Klein, a Newport Beach police spokesman.

The officers, who had just gone off duty, were traveling north on Jamboree Road south of Campus Drive about 7:30 p.m. Sunday when a motorist turned, hitting Chmura and then Kresge, according to Irvine police.

The driver, Jon Lyon, 55, of Huntington Beach, was not injured. No arrests or citations have been issued. The accident is under investigation.
