Blue Jays’ Batista Gets Best of Twins
Miguel Batista wanted the special night former teammate Randy Johnson had.
Batista took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning, and the Toronto Blue Jays handed Johan Santana his first loss in 20 starts with a 5-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday in Toronto.
“I think it stinks that a 40-year-old man can do it, and I’m 33 and I didn’t,†Batista said, referring to Johnson’s perfect game for Arizona against Atlanta. Batista (2-3) didn’t give up a hit until Luis Rivas’ single in the sixth. He gave up two runs on two hits, walking five and striking out five in six innings.
Reed Johnson and Carlos Delgado each had two runs batted in for the Blue Jays, and Terry Adams escaped a ninth-inning jam.
Santana (2-1) lost for the first time since July, 23, 2003, against Kansas City. He had won 10 consecutive decisions.
Kansas City 7, Texas 6 -- Carlos Beltran and Matt Stairs hit three-run homers, and the Royals rallied from a five-run deficit to beat the Rangers at Arlington, Texas. Mike Sweeney also homered for the Royals, who ended a three-game losing streak with their fourth road win.
Chicago 4, Cleveland 2 -- Jon Garland pitched seven strong innings at Cleveland and the White Sox ended the Indians’ season-high five-game winning streak. Damaso Marte gave up a sacrifice fly to Victor Martinez in the eighth and Billy Koch worked the ninth for his seventh save.
