White Sox Power Past Orioles, 15-0
Magglio Ordonez had four hits and drove in five runs, Frank Thomas hit a three-run homer and the Chicago White Sox had a season-high 19 hits in a 15-0 rout of the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night at Chicago.
Mark Buehrle (2-1) scattered four hits over seven innings to get his first victory in a month.
“I came in the dugout and joked around with the guys that I needed eight runs today,†Buehrle said. “They scored me almost double.â€
Jose Valentin hit a two-run homer and Willie Harris had a career-high four hits. Every starter reached base at least once and Carlos Lee and Juan Uribe were the only ones without a run batted in. It matched the White Sox’s biggest home shutout since July 15, 1907, when they defeated the New York Yankees, 15-0.
The White Sox had been scratching for offense, managing only eight runs as they lost a season-high three in a row last weekend. But they tagged Sidney Ponson (2-3) for seven runs and 11 hits in six innings, and scored seven against Rick Bauer in an eight-run seventh.
“I’m really [angry] that I pitched so badly,†Ponson said. “Right now, things aren’t going my way. Out of those 11 hits, three were bad pitches. The rest were good. It seems like the harder I work, the harder I get hit.â€
Minnesota 7, Seattle 6 -- The Twins’ Shannon Stewart knocked the ball out of catcher Dan Wilson’s glove to score from second base in the 11th inning at Minneapolis.
Stewart, who was slow to get up after the collision, scored on Doug Mientkiewicz’s bloop single to center against Ron Villone (3-1). Randy Winn’s throw beat Stewart, but the 5-foot-11, 200-pounder knocked the ball loose.
Oakland 5, Detroit 4 -- Damian Miller hit a tiebreaking, two-out single in the 15th inning at Detroit to give the Athletics their fourth victory in five games.
Boston 5, Cleveland 3 -- Pinch-hitter David McCarty had a two-run triple that broke an eighth-inning tie, and Pedro Martinez struck out 11 to lead the Red Sox at Boston.
Texas 5, Tampa Bay 4 -- Hank Blalock homered twice and Laynce Nix had a two-run shot at St. Petersburg, Fla., as the Rangers handed the Devils Rays a sixth consecutive loss.
Kansas City 5, Toronto 1 -- Juan Gonzalez hit a tiebreaking single in the sixth inning against Roy Halladay at Kansas City, Mo., and the Royals ended the Blue Jays’ six-game winning streak.
