Darrell Johnson, 75; Manager Took Red Sox to 1975 World Series

Darrell Johnson, 75, who managed the Boston Red Sox to the World Series in 1975, died Monday of leukemia at his home in Fairfield, Calif.
Johnson, who also managed the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers, had a 220-188 win-loss record during 2 1/2 seasons with the Red Sox. Boston lost to the Cincinnati Reds in seven games in the World Series. Johnson was fired midway through the 1976 season in Boston and replaced by Don Zimmer.
Johnson managed the Mariners from 1977 to 1980, compiling a 226-362 record.
He was fired during the 1980 season and replaced by former Dodger great Maury Wills.
A native of Horace, Neb., Johnson spent six seasons as a reserve catcher in the major leagues with seven teams including the Yankees, Cardinals and the Reds. He compiled a .234 career batting average in 134 games. He retired as a player in 1962.
