Times Staff Writer

The war of words between the Dodgers and San Diego Padre General Manager Kevin Towers continued Monday as the executive said he would not apologize for his comments attacking the team’s character.

“The last thing I wanted to do was wake up another club. Evidently, I may have done that,†Towers said. “But I’m not going to backpedal.

“I told somebody how I felt. I feel I’m a people person. I respect the game. I just gave a writer who covers an opposing club an honest answer of what I perceive about an opponent.â€

Towers stressed his comments were not directed at “one particular player,†presumably alluding to Dodger catcher Paul Lo Duca, who indicated he took the remarks “personal.†Towers said he was drawing on his eight-plus years of experience watching the Dodgers as Padre general manager.

“It’s not something I’m going to take back,†Towers said.

The Dodgers play host to the Padres in the opening series of the season.
