Gallop on over to Glendale
“Cavalia,†the latest French Canadian theatrical spectacle, will make its Southern California debut April 27 on a lot next to the Glendale Galleria.
Subtitled “A Magical Encounter Between Horse and Man,†“Cavalia†features 33 horses, human acrobats, a giant screen and music. Its creator, Normand Latourelle, was one of the founders of Cirque du Soleil.
But why Glendale? Angelenos are used to seeing the Cirque at the Santa Monica Pier or, most recently, Staples Center.
The community’s proximity to the horsy set who frequent Griffith Park and the Los Angeles Equestrian Center was one reason, Latourelle says. He counts horse fanciers as one of the foundations of his audience.
He also liked the fact that the city-owned property has a big garage that will house the horses in moderate temperatures when they’re not in the tent.
The site is planned as the future home of the Glendale Town Center and is being provided rent-free, although “Cavalia†is paying installation costs that will include leveling an alley now 2 feet lower than adjacent lots.
Latourelle also points out that Cirque’s U.S. premiere was in 1987 at a hitherto obscure site in Little Tokyo. “I like to surprise people with the site.†Not that the “Cavalia†location is all that unknown -- “when I say ‘it’s beside the Galleria,’ no one doesn’t know where that is.â€
