Trade Puts Tiger Species at Risk, Group Warns

A leading environmental group warned Tuesday that the Sumatran tiger was bound for extinction if the government of Indonesia did not crack down on illegal trading in the endangered species.
The World Wildlife Fund said only 400 to 500 tigers remained on the island of Sumatra as hunters continued to kill the animal commercially and for sport. Tiger skins, claws and teeth are widely sold in Indonesia as trophies and charms. Researchers found tiger products in 17 of the 24 towns surveyed and 20% of 453 shops visited in Indonesia.
