Joy of Scratch Baking
I really identified with Amy Sutherland’s article in the June 25 issue (“No Baking? That Truly Takes the Cake,†Commentary). As a former Pillsbury Bake-Off winner (3rd Senior) in 1959, I have been echoing her sentiments for years. When I competed as a new bride many years ago, the converted kitchen in the grand ballroom of the new Beverly Hilton Hotel smelled like heaven. Although my Golden Onion Rolls had a distinct, enticing aroma.... I had many fans, including Ronald Reagan -- who was with General Electric -- and Art Linkletter and Greer Garson, who were the hosts of the Bake-Off.
There was nothing more satisfying than creating an unusual, delicious recipe “from scratch.†Corny as it may sound, it wasn’t a “life of kitchen drudgery,†but a very fulfilling life.
