U.S. Appeals for Aid in Effort to Free Suu Kyi

The United States called on other nations to join it in putting pressure on Myanmar to pursue democratic reforms and release Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest.
The statement was issued a day after President Bush signed a law renewing trade sanctions on Myanmar for another year. The sanctions bar imports from the country, formerly known as Burma. They are intended to punish Myanmar’s military rulers for the detention of opposition leader Suu Kyi.
