Arctic Blast Hovers Over Midwest

MINNEAPOLIS — An arctic air mass from central Canada kept an icy grip on the upper Midwest on Thursday, driving up energy demand, closing some schools -- and leaving even cold-weather veterans in awe.
The National Weather Service said every weather station in Minnesota reported subzero temperatures Thursday evening.
The high temperature in Thief River Falls, Minn., reached only 24 degrees below zero, after a low temperature of 33 below. In Duluth, the wind chill dropped to 56 degrees below zero, according to the weather service.
Across Wisconsin, temperatures dipped to as low as 26 below in Drummond and Solon Springs and 25 below in Butternut.
In Sheboygan, Wis., the cold weather and a reduced water level on Lake Michigan caused icing in two water intake pipes, part of the water system serving Sheboygan, Sheboygan Falls and Kohler.
Sheboygan Mayor James Schramm declared an emergency, asking residents to refrain from nonessential water use.
