Death Toll in Northern Cold Wave Rises to 98

The death toll from a cold wave sweeping northern India climbed to 98, and authorities announced that they would provide compensation of about $1,000 to each victim’s family.

With night temperatures plummeting to 37 degrees in parts of worst-hit Uttar Pradesh state, authorities reported 22 deaths in Ballia, Hamirpur and Bhadohi districts.

“Those killed were mostly homeless and old people,†Anant Kumar Singh, the state relief commissioner, said in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh’s capital.
