Home Depot Inc., which is seeking to expand its share of the home appliance market, said Tuesday that it would begin selling refrigerators and other items online, something its top two competitors have done for years.

The world’s largest home improvement retailer said more than 1,800 items would be listed on its website.

Home Depot launched appliance showrooms in its stores in 2001 and has become the third-largest seller of home appliances, based on dollar value, it said.

No. 1 appliance retailer Sears, Roebuck & Co. has sold appliances over the Internet since 1999, a spokeswoman said. No. 2 Lowe’s Cos. has sold appliances online since 2000, a spokeswoman said.

In the third quarter, Home Depot’s share of the major appliance market rose to 8.6% from 6.2% a year earlier, based on units sold.

Appliances sold online by Home Depot will have the same prices as those purchased in the store, the company said.
