What: “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel.â€

Former Chicago Bear Alonzo Spellman, a 1990 first-round draft choice from Ohio State, talks with Bryant Gumbel about his bipolar disorder in this edition of “Real Sports.â€

Of an incident on an airline flight in 2002, Spellman says, “I remember screaming and yelling on a plane.â€

Flight captain Robert Freund, offering further details, says a flight attendant tried to talk to Spellman and calm him down.

“He turned to her and said, ‘I want to take my cleats and smash your ... face.’ And did it in such a way where she was terrified.â€

Spellman, who now takes medication for his illness, spent 18 months in federal prison for terrorizing passengers on that flight.

The Bears eventually released Spellman and, out of football for the first time in his life, he experienced the other extreme of bipolar disorder. “I was only depressed one time, and it lasted for six months,†he says. “One room. Six months.â€

In another segment, correspondent James Brown examines the relationship between Kellen Winslow Jr. and his Pro Football Hall of Fame father. Brown also has a feature on James “Bubba†Stewart Jr., an African American motocross competitor, and Armen Keteyian visits the Paskowitz family of San Diego, founders of the Paskowitz Surf Camp.
