Witness Protection Funding Increased
From Times Wire Reports
To help crack a string of unsolved murders, the Police Department is getting an extra $100,000 to encourage witnesses to come forward.
Mayor Gavin Newsom said the witness relocation program is intended to relocate witnesses and their families away from their communities during the course of a criminal investigation, which can last days to months. The program previously had a $15,000 annual budget.
The additional funds will allow the police to shield witnesses before and after an arrest has been made, Newsom said.
