Assembly Panel Kills Cough Syrup Proposal

Legislation that would have required minors to get a prescription before buying certain cough syrups or cold medicines was killed Wednesday in the Assembly Appropriations Committee.
Supporters of the bill, AB 1853, said the number of teenagers abusing a key ingredient of cough medicines -- dextromethorphan -- has soared.
But lobbyists for drug companies said the abuse cases represented only a fraction of the hundreds of thousands of calls to the state poison control hotline.
