Keppel Finally Wins Its Golf Tournament

Alhambra Keppel won its tournament for the first time, shooting a four-player score of 146 Monday at Alhambra Golf Course.

Tina Eng shot one-under 34 and Dorothy Lee shot 35 to lead Keppel, ranked No. 9 by The Times. No. 2 Peninsula, led by Jane Lee’s 34, finished second, three strokes behind. No. 10 Saugus was third at 155, and No. 8 Torrance shot 158 to finish fourth. Peninsula, which split its top players among two teams, also finished fifth at 162.

Jane Park of Torrance had four birdies without a bogey and took top individual honors with a 31. She finished two shots ahead of Amie Cochran of West Torrance.

The Long Beach Wilson boys’ water polo team lost Friday afternoon for the first time in nearly two years. The Bruins were defeated by Lake Forest El Toro, 4-3, in sudden-death overtime in a quarterfinal game at the South Coast tournament, ending their streak of 44 consecutive victories.

According to the Southern Section record book, the streak fell one short of the 45 consecutive victories by Corona del Mar between 1968-70.

The last Bruin loss was Oct. 27, 2001, against Corona del Mar.

Chris Allen scored the game-winner for El Toro, shoving in a pass from T.J. Fuentes with 2:08 left in sudden death.

The top-ranked Santa Ana Mater Dei girls’ volleyball team plays host to No. 4 Los Alamitos at 6 tonight.

The Monarchs, 3-0 in matches intended to be played to five games, are coming off a four-game victory over No. 8 Newport Harbor. Los Alamitos (8-0) beat three unranked teams last week.
