An Islamic militant leader who helped plot the 1981 assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat but later expressed regret has been released after nearly 22 years of a life sentence, police officials said.

Interior Minister Habib Adli decided to release Karam Zohdy, 51, in part because he is suffering from heart problems and diabetes, the official Middle East News Agency reported.

Zohdy’s Gamaa al Islamiya tried to overthrow the government during the 1990s.
